Kuwento - Ambition vs Skill
Wed Aug 27 2025
I know it's not unusual to become discouraged when working on an ambitious project, but I did not expect it to happen this early. As I struggle with creating a realistic environment in Unreal, my mind keeps drifting back to a previous Unreal project. It was a bit easier to create a stylized environment because it wasn't based on real life objects; there was a lower risk of it looking "uncanny". I still want to make the project look as realistic as I can, but not being skilled enough is a little frustrating.
I know I can just buy realistic assets or hire a proper artist, but, as always, I want to "own" as much of the project as I can. I'm hopeful that my skills will grow over the duration of the project. On a related note, I've decided to use Gaea, a terrain generating software that I can then export to Unreal.
While I was thinking about writing this post, I also thought about how I would have never started any personal projects at all if I only worked on projects that I was sure I was skilled enough to work on. I'm sorry for using the word "project" so much by the way. Words are hard.
