Kuwento - So Far
Wed Oct 01 2025
I know I seemed a little discouraged about the project a few weeks back, but I still feel highly motivated about it. It helps that I'm chipping away at it little by little. Nothing is complete, but I've begun writing a lot of the systems. I have a rudimentary interaction system and the beginnings of an inventory system. So far, the player can "pick up" an item. When the player interacts with an overlapping item, the item is destroyed and the item count property in the belonging data asset is updated. I've also included controller support from the beginning because I like using controllers when I can explore game worlds. I'm currently working on a UI design for the inventory (yes, I know the sensible thing to do would be to leave this until much later, but I like working on the art aspects of the project too and I don't want to burn myself out by sticking to a rigid structure).
Of course I want the UI to match that time period, so I've been doing some research. I don't remember whether I already mentioned the Laguna Copperplate Inscription or not (RIP memory), but I've been stuck on it for a few days. I'm not really sure yet if I want to add references to Kawi script or construct a similar-looking language just for the project. I'm making localization a priority right off the bat; adding a different language on top of the localized language might make it more difficult for me in the future. I'm considering using Kawi or a similar language on background items that aren't meant to be read.
I still need to make a background for the UI elements. I'm using gameuidatabase.com to study different designs. A lot of games set in the past seem to stick to warmer tones like yellow-ish brown but cooler tones are prominent in a lot of Southeast Asian designs and I want to represent that too. I don't know if I should make yellow the primary color and blue green an accent color or the reverse. I'll try a bunch of things out. I'm sure all of this will change in the future anyway given I don't lose motivation for the project.
